Here to Be Me
Here to Be Me is yoga project serving junior high and high school youth after school, and teachers in the summertime.
The Greater Mercy Foundation has partnered with lululemon to make yoga and its benefits accessible to more individuals in the community. In order to make this project most successful, we have also engaged with local partners, Wimberley ISD, Open Space, and Texas State University.
Here to Be Me has evolved, and one of the outgrowths of this initial project is Selah, a yoga school for the new paradigm. Selah expands yoga opportunities to young people, equipping them for life with yoga philosophy and tools. To find out more about this project, please visit the Selah Project Page.
Yoga has many benefits for the body like building strength, increasing flexibility, and developing balance. Yoga also reduces stress, improves concentration, and boosts self-confidence. With a start-up grant from lululemon, we hope participants experience all the benefits, and that this project expands and continues with community support. Here to Be Me project provides:
- A six-week, after-school yoga class for junior high and high school age students. Based on eligibility criteria, approximately 30% of the students will attend the class at no cost. This community of students will meet for six consecutive weeks and participate in a curriculum designed for their growing minds and bodies.
- Weekly yoga for at-risk youth in Wimberley ISD, offering them a time to renew their mind and body during the day.
- A yoga curriculum for WISD teachers that will directly benefit the teachers who participate, and provide tools they can use in the classrooms with their students.
Wimberley ISD is actively working with us to engage students and teachers in regular yoga activities. Professors from the Colleges of Education, Counselor Education, Research, and Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University are coming together to study the impact of the Here to Be Me yoga project. We are grateful for the interest and many facets our partners add to this project.
The Greater Mercy Foundation seeks to create connections in communities. If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact us so we can discuss your interest.
