Walk the River Remembrance Memorial Day Weekend

Beginning Friday, May 23, 2025

project description

We are approaching the ten year anniversary of the Memorial Day Flood and the October Flood of 2015. TGMF was invited by Visit Wimberley/The City of Wimberley to partner and establish a project that highlights the community connections and collaborative leadership that occurred during the floods of 2015.

Our project, Walk the River Remembrance, strengthens community connections with visual storytelling installations that focus on the interdependence, collaborations, and co-creative leadership within our village community.

We are seeking leaders who can guide and work collaboratively to create and install storytelling pieces that honor the experiences of those impacted by the flood and the connections made with the individuals and organizations that came to their aid. This project honors and supports our community’s mental wellbeing, cultivates courageous co-creative leaders, and accentuates our resilience and compassion during a time of crisis and transformation.

This project and its unfoldings are a reflection and remembrance of who we are as a community which was so very evident during these flood crises. Co-creation, collaboration, and compassion saved lives and livelihoods, provided basic needs including shelter, food, and clothing, and rebuilt, rehabilitated, and rehoused our friends and neighbors.

Walk the River Remembrance is a project to remind us of who we are as individuals and as a community, and to honor and cultivate compassionate co-creative leadership in Wimberley and beyond.

This project will be both an in-person and a digital interactive storytelling experience for the public that captures the narratives of those directly affected by the floods and the community members who helped them. We are requesting proposals for this project. The vision for this project is to offer:

1. Storytelling through images and words: To collect, curate, and present stories from families affected by the floods and the supporters who assisted them. These stories will be collected through interviews with families we have identified who want to participate in this project.

2. Community Engagement: To collaboratively create an interactive platform that invites community members to share their stories and experiences that both tell the history of this event and highlights the unique and deep community connections of our town.

3. Education: To raise awareness of the impact of this historic event had for our community and landscape and illuminate and honor the importance of compassionate community action and co-creative leadership during crises.

Project History

The 2015 floods that occurred in both May and October changed the landscape of our village forever. Over a dozen people lost lives in these catastrophic events. And, our community came together; those who needed help and care received it from those who showed up to search, rescue, save lives and livelihoods, offer food, water, shelter, clothing, personal items, and compassion.

We invite the community to join us in remembering and honoring all who lost lives, livelihoods, homes, and belongings, and those who supported, saved, cleaned-up, and rebuilt.

The Walk the River Remembrance is a leadership and storytelling project. This platform pairs artists and storytellers with families who were directly impacted by these floods. The stories of the families and those who supported them through the devastation will be part of an interactive installation that begins at Visit Wimberley 280 Old Kyle Road, Wimberley, Tx. 78676. We will continue to add story installations at various sites throughout town to honor these families and the community that came together when it mattered most.
